  <abstract>La tasa de pobreza de un país no depende tanto de factores económicos o demográficos como de la orientación política de sus gobernantes. Es la tesis que mantiene el autor de esta investigación, que demuestra con datos empíricos cómo cuando los partidos de izquierdas han gobernado en los países occidentales, y cuando los sindicatos han conseguido influir en el mercado de trabajo, las tasas de pobreza se han reducido de forma muy significativa. Tras relacionar las tasas de pobreza registradas en 16 países entre 1977 y 1997 con la influencia de sindicatos y partidos de izquierda en los Gobiernos y en los organismos de regulación laboral, el autor subraya la capacidad de la izquierda &amp;amp;ndash;a veces a través de los mecanismos del Estado del Bienestar, a veces al margen de ellos&amp;amp;ndash; para reducir la pobreza en los países del primer mundo.</abstract>
